Rebuilding of the bufferbeam assembly nears completion.

The view below shows the new front gusset plates welded on the left and right sides of the frames.

 

Just inboard of the new plates are the original gusset angle plates. These have had packers welded to them to correct previous misalignment and ensure that the new bufferbeam plate sits firmly against the gussets.



The view above shows the the new upper and lower gussets on the left hand side of the locomotive.

 

It is these components that help give the bufferbeam its strength by transferring any force applied to the buffers, through the gussets and into the heavily braced main frame sides.
