The tender pipework has all been painted and final fitted, with the steam heat piping also wrapped in woven glass fibre insulating tape.
A batch of new brake pins, that were made to replace those stolen last July, have been sent for case hardening.
Much work went into preparing the loco for display at the 50th Anniversary Gala, the recovered original smokebox door hinges, lamp brackets, etc. were trial assembled onto the new door, the smoke deflectors cleaned and everything given a fresh coat of paint.
The original smokebox ‘Return of Steam’ headboard from the loco’s 1973 arrival at Quorn, was given a fresh coat of paint and a mounting bracket fabricated.
The smokebox was placed on the loco, followed by the chimney, smoke deflectors and door, with adjustments made as required. The loco and tender were given a thorough clean in the preceding weeks and all moving parts oiled up prior to the move to Quorn.
